“Old Tom” visits Heathmont East Primary School!
On Wednesday 16 September the popular children’s author and illustrator Leigh Hobbs visited the children at Heathmont East Primary School. Leigh talked about writing and illustrating his well known “Old Tom” books, as well as his other adventures which include “Fiona the Pig”. His visit was part of the school’s Literacy/Numeracy Day. The whole school turned out to hear Leigh discuss the adventures of his favourite characters and his latest character “Mr Chicken”. All students enjoyed learning how to draw characters and illustrate their own books. After Leigh’s visit the children broke up into multi-aged groups and celebrated the Children’s Book of the Year short-listed books by participating in some exciting activities around the school. Some of the activities included cooking, making bird hangers, necklace making and creating their own tree. Thanks to IGA Heathmont and Bendigo Community Bank Heathmont for their generous support of the day.
Grade 3/4 Camp!
Grade 3-4 children, all 100 of them, recently spent a wonderful three days at Mount Evelyn Recreation camp. Activities included the Giant Swing, Flying Fox, low ropes course, archery, bush cooking, sense trail, Kaos partner orienteering and Wildlife Encounter. During the evenings, children had the opportunity to toast marshmellows, sing a long with a guitar, games in the hall, a group Trivia challenge and a very enjoyable Red Faces night with special guest judges. The food was outstanding and there was very little left on plates. Children were in duty groups to complete tasks such as setting up tables, clearing up and drying the dishes! On our final day, after packing up bags and cabins, the children set off for a six kilometre walk to Silvan Dam where a barbecue was ready and waiting for us. A perfect end to a great camp. Thanks to all involved.
